Thoughts on Work Ethic

-Written from Phone-

Recent events have grown my frustration with how some people still remain in the mindset of entitlement before performance. I’ve always been a firm believer that performance needs to be the focus and track record for an employee and employer to base proper benefits and compensations. However, it seems many of the fast going world and instant gratification generation want all the bells and whistles prior to ever even trying to reach performance minimums. We all want to make more money at what we do, work a bit less to allow more time for what we want to enjoy in life, but some folks take this to the extreme and want all play and no work.

I’ve always felt that when you make a promise then you do everything in your power to follow through. If you are to be somewhere at a certain time, then you arrive early and stay close by in order to be on time. And if you want a raise, then you need a track record of consistent hard work, efficient efforts, prompt arrival, and willing to work extra, that’ll give you the edge to leverage a raise or promotion.

But time and time again I see people who consistently show up to work late or not at all, hardly can focus on working for even 10min, leave early, and barely do the minimum if at all, and still be mad at everyone for not praising their every move and throwing money at them.

What has come of the world that even with as technically advance, educational competition, and multi-country hiring, that there remains workers, employers, companies that can’t seem to step up and put in the effort needed in today’s society and business to succeed.

I’m no millionaire, I’m not a college graduate, I’m not a business owner, but I’ve never been one to not take any of my jobs with a relaxed mentality. I’ve always pursued even my worse and boring jobs with professionalism and attention to detail.

Often people are quick to speak to others what they would do if they were running the business, but so few of those people bitter at the business are willing to step up and make an effort to take charge and be part of the solution for success. People fear being wrong, fear rejection of their ideas, fear separation from social circles if put in charge.

The world needs more leaders, not supervisors or managers, or leads. But real leaders, leaders unphased of rejection, thinking outside the box, testing boundaries, and little fear of failure. Failure is needed for successful growth, failure that is studied, plans altered, and execution to completion attempted for success.

Leaders are willing to make positive change and willing to work hard to prove to others it’s possible. Leaders can be anyone in any situation, and leaders don’t need to lead constantly. Lead a small brainstorming session at work, lead a new method to perform a task that saves even 5sec. Just begin leading and feeling the fears begin to fade as you feel comfortable willing to accept responsibility and learn to overcome failures by consistently trying to learn from them and finding ways to reach success.

Be a part of positive change, be a part of something bigger than yourself, become a leader in situations regardless if you’re the boss. Being a leader isn’t about barking orders or dictating situations, it’s about being a positive influence in situations where others want to be a part of the greater goal and be a part of positive actions.
